Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 1/2 cups butter, softened
  • 2 cups white sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 3 cups confectioners' sugar, sifted
  • Red and blue food coloring

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugar until smooth. Beat in eggs and vanilla extract. Stir in flour, baking powder, and salt. Cover the dough and chill for at least one hour.
  2. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  3. Roll out chilled dough to a thickness of 1/4 to 1/2 inch on a floured surface; cut out shapes using cookie cutters.
  4. Place cut-out cookies on ungreased baking sheets, spacing them apart. Bake for 6 to 8 minutes until lightly golden; cool on wire racks.
  5. For icing, whisk together milk and sifted powdered sugar until smooth. Divide into halves; color one half red and another blue. Use piping bags for decorating.
  6. Coat each cookie with white icing while still wet; add colored icing circles and use a toothpick to create a fireworks effect.
